This part of the workroom include the cupboards that store the processing material and new books. The small metal box stores the subscription cards of magazines displayed in the Main Library area. Beside it are the new books ready to be issued, first preference given to student librarians. Blue basket is "paper recycling bin". Books on the shelves are for browsing in the library only - the card system used to record borrowers name. Beyond the glass cubical is part of the library with Fast reader and Fiction books.

Mangere College Workroom, on the shelves are the back issues of Times, Listerner and MANA magazines. Student magazines for leisure like Creme, Girlfriend, TV Hits and Car Performance. Also Past - Current MC School magazines and other School Yearbooks. Student Librarians put their bags on the bottom shelves.

Book week ideas

Hi everyone
I would be very keen to hear your ideas for a successful Book Week. I have scheduled one with Scholastic in August the week before the Storylines Family Free day on Sunday August 30. Am hoping to see a more active involvement by our children at this fabulous day following a week hopefully of fun book activities.
It will be my first Book Week and I am very open to your ideas.

Bronze, silver and gold awards

Hi everyone,  wasn't the course fantastic.  Looking forward to the next one.  Does anyone know where I can find the Bronze, Silver and Gold award criteria information for the student librarians.  Our school is looking forward to changing how our librarians do their jobs in the library and we would like to look into this fantastic idea of rewarding them with the award system.

Thanks for your help. Andrea

Day 2 Tasks to complete for May 12, 2009

Task One
Read to students in the library; make this a planned activity as well as an informal activity. Keep some notes on how this goes and how you feel about it. Read the notes we gave you about Reading Aloud and build a case for this activity in your library/school.

Task Two
Check out your Job Description. Use the guide on the National Library website. Remember we looked at the National Library website. Click on 'for school staff', 'get advice' and scroll down to Information Guides etc.

Task Three
Post photographs of your workroom on the blog. These will be 'before' and 'after' pictures. Blogger accepts JPGs and it is best to keep these small (not too much storage space).

Task Four
Create your own library Orientation task for students/teachers and bring to Day 2.

Task Five
Bring a book to Day 2 that you have weeded or that you are not sure should be weeded.

Task Six
Request a loan from CIS (Curriculum Information Services) for yourself or a teacher. Use the online request form that Alice showed you. If the loan is for you it can be used for a display in the library or for reading aloud in the library.

Sophisticated Picture Books

Hi everyone

I've decided that our SPB collection is in serious need of a sort out. I'm sure half the books in it shouldn't actually be there. Can anyone supply me with a good definition of what should and should not be in a primary school Sophisticated Picture Books collection? I was hoping there'd be something in the National Library's help documents - like their guides to the Reference collection and Magazines - but can't find anything. Thanks very much.
Jayne (Greenhithe School).

Another angle - Cathy's work space

This is my desk area, it is a good length and width and to the right is another longer bench where I can cover books and my junior librarians can work. As the books are being processed they are put in the appropriate blue bins clearly labelled.
Look forward to seeing some of your work areas.
Cathy

Cathy's work place

I have 3 shelves on the back wall in the work area as currently I share the space with after school care so we are fairly cramped. All my admin folders, issue and browsing cards, catalogues, class folders, junior librarian logbooks and author information is on these 3 shelves.
My lack of space will be resolved with a new library due to begin start of Term 3 (or so the rumour goes).

Well done everyone!

It was great to meet you all yesterday and start the year's work. It was also very good to see you leaving with smiles on your faces and a minimum of confusion being displayed. Stay in touch with each other and stay in touch with us and the blog. Looking forward to next time, May 12th.

Before we begin...

To prepare for the course you need to have familiarised yourself with two documents (both available as links under Useful Resources):

The school library in the information landscape: guidelines for New Zealand Schools, pp 5-17, 48-50. (Cover on the left - should be available in your school)

And

School Libraries Work! 2008 (3rd) edition, Scholastic
