Websites for children

Hi Everyone
Our principal has just given me internet access on my library computer. She is happy for me to have some websites that the children could access but they have to be listed. I have suggested Auckland City Library and the National Library website. I am interested to know from you of any websites you regularly use with your children. We are Year 1- 6 at our school.

  1. Hi Cathy
always a mission to choose websites and maintain links. You might like to look at: Manukau Libraries Childrens eResources, Christchurch City Library, TeAra, DOC, Te Papa (other museums can be good too, like Waiouru army museum for older children), NZ History net and then there are things like the International Children's Library, NASA/European Space Agency, history101 etc.
Take a look at http://www.naperville-lib.org/LibServices/children/fwl/popularsites.htm just for comparison with a US library.
I have found that looking at the websites listed in the back of books can be really good, we are now adding some of these to our catalogue (we use AccessIT) and the system has a URL check function which helps keep everything up to date and means we can add urls for a limited time (e.g. for projects or themes relevant to the teaching programme).
I have found that finding good websites means taking time, exploration and advice from others.
    Good luck - Jane

  2. Thanks Jane
I hadnt looked recently at the blog so wasnt aware you had commented. You are right selecting good websites takes time and sometimes I feel overwhelmed to do so so many thanks for your guidance. I sense you are very experienced and have a wealth of knowledge so thanks for sharing. An email tonight from Slanza invites me to hear a Julie Czerneda,a Canadian Sc Fi Author. I don't know her - is she a children's author.
